LED Televisions Have Hit The Market

By Jed Young

The latest trend to hit the consumer electronics market is LED Televisions. LED stands for light emitting diode so as the name suggests the television is composed of a large number LEDs which are used to produce a picture on your television screen. This might be a very simplistic explanation of things but this is how the technology works in a nutshell.

The term LED Televisions is something that Samsung has widely used and it has been under much debate if the television should be called an LED television since it's not entirely composed of LEDs. However the job of these LEDs is to light up the LCD display and in turn produce great shades of various colors and deep dark colors which means that it improves over all picture quality.

When you look at televisions there is a big difference between the picture quality and technology of conventional LCD televisions versus LED Televisions. From a point of view of a lay person the picture quality is much better with the television able to produce very dark blacks, and bright colors.

LED Televisions are also extremely slim owing to the edge-LED lighting technology. The current models you see on the market are around an inch think. They are also less power hungry when compared to conventional LCD televisions. Experts believe that they can save as much as 40% more electricity than conventional LCD televisions of a similar size.

There is also a much wider color gamut the television can deal with as compared to regular LCDs. This is especially true in those areas where RGB type backlighting is also used.

There are several methods that are used for backlighting LCD panels. By using either white or RGB (Red, Green and blue) LED arrays which are placed behind the panel. The Edge-LED lighting technology uses white colored LEDs which are arranged around the inside of the frame of the television using a special light diffusion panel which is perfectly designed to spread the rays of light evenly behind the panel.

One of the biggest of the many benefits of having an LED backlight is that it offers a lower level of power consumption as well as very high brightness. When you compare it to conventional LCD lighting there are also color advantages. These are something which cannot be achieved with regular LCD technology. However one of the biggest barriers to wide usage of LED television is the cost of purchasing the unit. As time passes the prices are lowering though.

There are various types of LED Televisions on the market today which are manufactured by various consumer electronics companies. Each and every one is slightly different in the sense that they use their own technology to ensure good high picture quality. When choosing a television make sure that you compare it with others in the same category. Make sure that it has all the functions that you are looking for in a television. You also need to pay attention to the price as well. - 29872
