By Philip Woods

You would be very hard pressed to find a more popular and impactful gaming system that the Nintendo Wii. Some may actually disagree with this statement and point towards the popularity of the Xbox and the Sony PlayStation as evidence they are the tops of the pops in gaming circles. Honestly, those systems are quite impactful as well. However, one cannot deny the popularity of the Wii as it is an enormous bestseller.

This does not mean that the Wii system is the only service that one needs to purchase. There are a number of excellent systems on the market and they are quite excellent. But, it is no secret that the severe impact of the Wii on popular culture is far beyond what anyone ever really thought possible. It does seem that the Wii has risen to the category of the most successful and popular consumer electronics system ever devised. There is good reason for this: it is a fantastic console with a number of awesome games.

What is commonly known as the history of the Wii system? The history is a rather brief one but impactful nonetheless. For those interested as to the system's origins, here is a brief examination:

The Wii is a console that is born of the legendary Nintendo Company. There are a number of systems that have been produced by Nintendo and the Wii is the 7th video game console released by the electronics giant. In general, the concept of the gaming system is to seek a means of competing with the other "big names" of the industry which arem of course, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. The Wii has most definitely done quite well against the systems that it competes with in the consumer marketplace. The sales figures of the Wii are nothing less than spectacular. In fact, it has left all the competitors in the dust. The enormous sales figures are clearly indicative of this.

There are many reasons why the Wii is popular. Many will point to the development of the wireless controller known as the Wii Remote as a major factor. This feature allows for a number of handheld options that makes for more versatile game play sessions.

The design of the Wii is such that various console integrations are possible. This component was the major evolution that helped set the stage for the enhancement of the many established integrated systems currently in existence today. The development of this concept was one that took some time to develop. The plans on the drawing board for this concept originated in early as 2001 but took some time to be perfected. Now, the systems have been advanced enough so that their use in systems in the modern era is possible.

The eventually release of the Nintendo Wii in 2006 sent shock waves through the realm of gaming. Many people knew that the system would be a huge seller but no one anticipated the enormous sales figures that occurred. The Wii shattered the sales figures of its competitors and established itself firmly as the top console in the gaming industry. Can it last on this perch? Time will tell.

While the future of gaming will eventually reveal itself in time and a console and system that eclipses the Wii shall arrive sooner or later. Whether such a console will be a product produced by Nintendo remains to be seen. However, it is fairly obvious that the impact of the Wii on the gaming industry has been so strong that it most definitely will not be forgotten any time soon.
