LED Monitors Offer Longer Life

By Elton James

More than likely you are reading this article on an LCD or plasma monitor. These monitors are much less bulky than the older monitors that took up half of a normal sized desk. Most of these monitors have a much clearer picture than the older monitors did. If you want to take the next step, then you will want to switch to LED monitors.

The difference between an LCD monitor and an LED monitor is with the source of the back light. The older LCD monitors are back lit with florescent tubes. These tubes only have a lifetime of three to four years before they begin to dim. Although it may seem that the smart thing to do to correct this problem would have been to allow the consumer to change the florescent tubes and keep the same monitor, but this option has not been offered by manufacturers. Instead, users are left with no alternative other than to replace their monitors. Thus, monitors become a large source of electronic waste.

A second disadvantage of the LCD monitors is that they are more bulky and heavy than the LED monitors. The florescent tubes require this additional thickness. LED monitors can be made quite thin, especially those that are edge lit monitors. These are the monitors that have been made possible by the technology developed for ultra thin laptops.

The florescent tubes in LCD monitors do not produce a full range of color of light. Therefore, there will be some of the LCD crystals that do not appear as bright when certain colors are lit compared to others. This may cause the image to appear to be blurry or less clear than the same image on an LED monitor.

LED monitors now require much less energy than any other monitor on the market. In addition they are some of the brightest monitors available on the market. They also have a longer life span before they begin to lose their brightness.

There are some complaints about the edge lit LED monitors. Some users find that the screen does not appear to be evenly lit and is brighter along the edges than it is in the center. This matter may be resolved simply through daily use of the monitor to allow your eyes to adjust to the difference.

Still other users find LED screens to be too bright for their applications. Since the brightness can cause eyestrain after continued use, users are advised to find monitors that allow for brightness control. By dimming the monitor, users may reduce the amount of eyestrain they experience.

Even with these two minor complaints, the LED monitor is one of the best monitors available today. The monitors are super thin and they have the best clarity available in any monitor. They also last longer than LCD monitors that have the florescent tubes for back lighting.

Choosing a monitor with long life is a great choice for the environment. Whilst many people have simply given in to purchasing a new monitor every time they buy a new home or office computer, monitors should not have to be updated as often as the CPU. Choosing an LED monitor gives you the best chance of having a quality monitor that will last as long or longer than your current computer. - 29872
